Indexing Process

Upon admission to a training school for the Medical Laboratory Science programme, we require students to submit an application for Indexing within 30 days following the commencement of training. Applications for Indexing are made using the KMLTTB online services, and the document is submitted to the Board through your Head of Department. Your training institution will guide you on how to complete your application.

The Board, through its Indexing Section, verifies submissions to ensure that students admitted to training schools meet the minimum admission criteria for their programme of choice. Once verification is completed, you will be assigned an ‘Index Number’ which is a unique reference that will remain your identification throughout training and practice. The outcome of the indexing process will be communicated to you through your training institution.

The indexing details are used to track your progress through training and determine your eligibility to sit the Board licensure examination.

Students who have not submitted themselves to the Indexing Process are not acknowledged by the Board and are not eligible to study or practice Medical Laboratory Science in Kenya.

Accreditation of Training Institutions

The Kenya Medical Laboratory Technician and Technologist Board (KMLTTB) is responsible for approving programmes of study for the Medical Laboratory Science professions. To date, the Board has approved 145 MLS training institutions to train students at degree and diploma levels.

The Board has provided Standards of MLS Education in Kenya and the Education Policy to offer a framework of reference for the MLS education programmes in the country. This is aimed at preparing safe and competent MLS professionals who will function effectively not only as members but also as leaders in the health care delivery system.

We perform accreditation of programmes/courses. Any school, college, or institution intending to offer an MLS education programme for the purpose of awarding a diploma or degree in MLS is required to seek approval from KMLTTB. The Council shall conduct monitoring of programme implementation and adherence to quality training to ensure that the institution continues to maintain the set standards of MLS practice as stipulated in the Standards of MLS Education and Practice in Kenya.

Examination

Licensure Examination

The Board is responsible for ensuring that all MLS Professionals within its jurisdiction meet an acceptable level of competence before they begin to practice.

The licensure examination is administered through Board-communicated examination centers. It consists of 6 individual papers for Degree and Diploma, as well as a practical and oral examination. Each paper examines specific competencies expected of MLS professionals and is administered over the course of three hours.

We determine applicants’ eligibility to write the exam by evaluating their conduct, academic, and practical progress at the training school.

Candidates are allowed a maximum of 4 resits and must satisfy the Board of Examiners for each of the papers before they are eligible to apply for enrollment/registration and licensing.
