Registration & Renewals


Upon admission to a training school, for all levels of Medical Laboratory Sciences, we require students to submit an application for Indexing within 30 days following commencement of training.

The Board through indexing verifies submissions to ensure that students admitted to training schools meet the admission criteria for their programme of choice. Once verification is completed, the Board assigns an ”Index Number” which is a unique reference that will remain your identification throughout training and practice.





The KMLTTB offers examination in three levels:

  • Degree (Bsc. Medical Laboratory Sciences)
  • Diploma
  • Certificate

The examinations are done twice every year.In the months of February and September unless decided otherwise by the Board for unavoidable reasons.

The following subjects are examinable:

  1. Medical microbiology
  2. Clinical Chemistry
  3. Haematology
  4. Blood transfusion
  5. Histopathology/cytology
  6. Medical Parasitology/Entomology
  7. Practicals covering the 6 subject areas

The Board registration is done in three categories;

  1. Professionals
  2. Laboratories
  3. Institutions


The Board registers professionals  in two categories

  1. Technicians-Certificate holders
  2. Technologists- Degree,Higher Diploma & Diploma Holders and others

The Board Registers Medical laboratories in 6 Classes both private and public:

  1. Class B– Equivalent to District Hospital Laboratory Level
  2. Class C– Equivalent to Provincial Hospital Laboratory Level
  3. Class D– Equivalent to National/Referral Hospital Laboratory Level
  4. Class E– Equivalent to specialized Laboratories e.g Training Colleges for Medical Laboratory Science
  5. Class F– Equivalent to Research Laboratory

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD is the conscious updating of professional knowledge and the improvement of professional competence throughout a person’s career.

KMLTTB through the support of development partners has developed CPD policy guidelines for the implementation of a mandatory structured and better coordinated approach to CPD activities as approved by the Board for medical laboratory personnel in Kenya.

The Board will ensure that the renewal of practice  licenses is aligned to attainment of 50 CPD points (minimum) per year.(The Board shall provide a list of certified CPD providers in due time.)
